Introduction

The purpose and context of engineering education

This chapter tries to answer the question “Why – and for whom – am I providing this engineering education?” In it I describe why we need to continually assess and understand the experience and attitudes of incoming students.  I also emphasise the importance of explaining to incoming students, with examples, the significance and role of science and engineering in society.

What you might take away from this chapter:

  • The question ‘what (and who) am I providing this engineering education for?’;
  • The realisation of the need to continually assess and understand the experience and attitudes of incoming students;
  • An understanding of the importance of explaining to incoming students, with examples, the significance and role of science and engineering in society.

    I hope this gets wide attention. Have you considered asking the IET’s E&T magazine whether they will review it?
